Jinhua, April 24, 2017: As the Sun set down on the horizon of Jinhua, temperatures dropped to the pleasant level in the Jinhua Sports Centre where over 3000 spectators gathered to witness the 1st leg of Asian Grand Prix 2017 in Jinhua. Over 150 athletes from 19 Asian countries took part in the fast paced 18 event schedule.

Majed El Dein Ghazal of Syria has been on meteoric rise in the high jump, soaring global heat in the men’s high jump with his 2.36m clearance in 2016; started his 2017 season with a jump of 2.27m to win in Jinhua. 

On the other end of the track, two field events were in progress simultaneously; women shot put and men’s Javelin. Both winners of these events registered World class marks. First was Cheng Chao-Tsun who recently set new Chinese Taipei record in the Javelin throw with a distance of 84.77m, fall short of 5cm to improve on it but his second round throw of 84.72m was good enough to beat India’s World Junior Record holder Neeraj Chopra to second place. Neeraj could managed only 82.11m in his 4th round throw. Huang Shih-Feng also from Chinese Taipei took bronze medal with a throw of 80.64m.

Manpreet Kaur of India wasn’t happy with her opening round throw of 16.69m in the women’s shot put. However, she bounced back in the second round with a personal best throw of 18.03m, a new Indian record and first Indian to cross 18m barrier in the shot put. Riding high on her 18m plus throw, Manpreet pushed for more distance in the third round and this time it was 18.86m, 2nd furthest throw in the World this year. Bian Ka of China could not respond to Manpreet’s throw, finishing on the second place with best throw of 17.96m. Song Jiayuan, promising 19 years old youngster from Shanghai won third place with a throw of 17.54m.

Vietnam’s Bui Thi Thu Thao just couldn’t get take off in the long jump, fouling 4 attempts in a row but in the last round jump Bui not only got her take off correctly on the board but also won the first place with a performance of 6.58m, beating V Neena of India who was leading until last round jump with 6.46m. Xu Xiaoling of China finished on the third place with 6.35m.

Feng Bin of China won women's discus throw final with a throw of 61.66m in the Asian Grand Prix 2017 at Jinhua on April 24. Liu XiaoXin also from China finished distant second place with 57.29m while Insaeng Subenrat of Thailand finished on the third place with 55.13m. In the men’s shot put Samari Ali of Iran won first place with a throw of 18.90m

Dong Bin, Olympic 2016 Triple Jump Bronze medallist from China won Gold medal in the men's triple jump with a jump of 16.68m. 

Quach Thi Lan of Vietnam won women's 400m run with a performance of 53.15s while her elder brother Quach Cong Lich had to settle on second place in the men’s 400m with 47.21s. Youssef Mohamed Dagher of Kuwait won the race in 47.19s.

Nadiya Dusonova of Uzbekistan won women's High Jump clearing 1.84m height. Duong Thi Viet Anh of Vietnam and Yeung Man Wei of Hongkong finished on the second and third place respectively clearing identical 1.80m

Herath Induril of SriLanka got better of India's Jinson Johnson in the last stride to claim first place in the men's 800m with a performance of 1:50.69s. Jinson was 0.02s slower with a timing of 1:50.71s. Alzofairi Ebrahim of Kuwait took bronze in 1:51.23s

In the 100m finals, Viktoriya Zyabkina of Kazakhstan won women's 100m run with a performance of 11.44s while host country sprinter Mi hong clocked 10.37s to win men’s 100m.

In the sprint relays, Indonesian team ( Fadlin Ahmad, Iswandi Hamid, Eko Rimbawan, Boby Yaspi) won men's 4x100m relay with a performance of 39.53s beating Thailand's young team to 2nd place ( 40.12s) and Kuwait took third place clocking 41.76s. Kazakhstan won women's 4x100m relay with a performance of 44.50s. Thailand finished second with 45.62s and Host China was third clocking 45.86s.

 Caravan of Asian Athletes will now move to Jiaxing for the second leg of the Asian Grand Prix Athletics 2017 series on April 27.
